How to Prevent Dehydration During Fasting and Stay Energized Until You Break the Fast

Fasting is not only a religious obligation, but it also offers health benefits. Although fasting offers numerous benefits for your body, it can increase the risk of dehydration if not done carefully, especially during hot weather or when you are very active.

Fasting can lead to dehydration because you must endure thirst and hunger from dawn until dusk.

Even when fasting, ensure your body's fluid needs are met to prevent dehydration. Here are some tips on how to prevent dehydration during fasting.

1. Create a Water Drinking Schedule

Dehydration during fasting is primarily caused by insufficient fluid intake from iftar (breaking the fast) until suhoor. Creating a water drinking schedule using a 2-4-2 pattern is the first solution for preventing dehydration during fasting:

  • 2 cups of water after breaking the fast: Drinking plenty of water after a day of activity can help restore body fluids lost. When it is time to break the fast, drink water before other meals and make it your habit. One cup during the Maghrib call to prayer, and one cup during the Isha call to prayer.
  • 4 cups of water at night: After Tarawih prayer, drink four cups of water periodically until bedtime. For example, two cups of water during dinner and two more cups before bedtime.
  • 2 cups of water during suhoor: During fasting, do not skip suhoor as it helps you restore your energy to fast all day. Drink a cup of water after you wake up during suhoor time and one more cup after you eat suhoor.

2. Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables

In addition to drinking water, you can meet your fluid needs by eating fruits and vegetables, which contain water.

Eating fruits and vegetables helps not only to meet your body's fluid needs but also keeps you fit and energized throughout the day during fasting, as they are rich in nutrients. 

Watermelon, tomatoes, celery, and starfruit are a few examples of fruits and vegetables with high water content that are suitable for consumption during fasting.

3. Eat Broth-based Dishes for Iftar and Suhoor

One more tip on how to prevent dehydration during fasting is to consume broth-based dishes, such as chicken broth or vegetable soup. Not only does it help prevent dehydration, but broth-based dishes are also low in calories, which helps you maintain a healthy weight during fasting.

However, use salt moderately when making soups and broths, as its high sodium content can cause the body to lose fluids more quickly.

4. Reduce Salt Intake

Do you know that salt contains high levels of sodium that can make you feel thirsty easily? So, reducing your salt intake can help prevent dehydration during fasting.

5. Exercise at the Right Time

Remember, fasting is not an excuse to skip exercise. However, it is important to choose the right time to exercise to prevent dehydration due to excessive physical activity.

Avoid exercising or engaging in intense physical activity during the day to prevent excessive sweating. Another tip to avoid dehydration during fasting is to exercise in the afternoon or evening before breaking the fast.

Mild activities such as walking, aerobics, yoga, and short bike rides are great recommendations for exercise during fasting.

6. Avoid Excessive Caffeine Consumption

Consuming too much caffeine can cause the body to urinate more frequently due to its diuretic content. This can lead to dehydration.

Keep in mind that the diuretic effect of caffeine is more significant when consumed in large amounts, around 250 mg or more, which is roughly equal to two cups of coffee per day.

Other than that, try to limit your consumption of foods and drinks that are high in sugar as well, as sugar intake can also increase thirst during fasting.
