7 Reasons You Don’t Sweat During Exercise & Tips

Exercising is a good way to make your body sweat. Home or gym workouts can help the body sweat more than daily activities, such as eating or working in front of a computer. What should you do if you don’t sweat during exercise?

In fact, there are several causes of not sweating during exercise, which stem from certain body conditions. Sweat, which is supposed to be the body’s natural response during exercise, cannot be produced due to certain factors from the body.

Discover why some people don’t sweat much during exercise in the article below.

Causes of Not Sweating During Exercise

Generally, sweat is secreted automatically when the body’s temperature increases due to exercise. Sweating is the body’s way to release heat and maintain body balance. By releasing heat from the body, which evaporates into sweat, you will feel cool naturally.

Hence, what should we do if we don’t sweat during exercise? Here are some factors that explain this phenomenon:

1. The Activities Use Less Energy

Not sweating while exercising indicates that you don’t release energy optimally. In other words, the intensity of the activity may become the reason why you don’t sweat during exercise. This occurs when you perform an excessively light workout that the body does not release sweat as expected.

For example, stretching or warms-up no longer helps you sweat since the body’s metabolism has adjusted with these activities. To sweat more, you can add more intense activities, namely jogging or cycling.

2. The Air’s Temperature is Below the Body’s Temperature

One of the causes of not sweating during exercise is the environment or room’s temperature. Most people sweat more while exercising in a hot and damp room compared to a cool and dry environment.

When the room’s temperature is higher than the body’s, sweat will be released more easily. Conversely, exercising in a room in which its temperature is cooler than the body’s temperature may reduce sweat production.

In the middle of exercising in a hot temperature, the body tries to cool its temperature down by producing sweat.

Meanwhile, in cooler conditions, the body temperature remains stable, so sweat production is lower.

3. Insufficient Fluid Levels in the Body

Fluid deficiency, also known as dehydration, is one of the causes of not sweating during exercise. When there is no more fluid to secrete, the body will produce less sweat. This condition is typically caused by not getting plenty of water intake before or after exercising.

4. Side Effects of Medications

Taking certain medications may suppress sweat production during exercise. For example, anticholinergic drugs can interfere with nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands. In addition, these medications may also cause side effects such as dry mouth and throat.

5. Disrupted Nerve Functions

Another cause to watch out for is impaired nerve function. When there is injury or damage to the autonomic nerves, sweat production can be affected. This condition may be associated with several medical disorders, including diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease, and Ross syndrome.

6. Certain Skin Conditions

Not sweating during exercise may also be caused by certain skin conditions. Skin disorders that block or damage sweat glands require medical attention. Some conditions that may reduce or inhibit sweat production include heat rash, psoriasis, and scleroderma.

In addition, skin injuries such as severe burns or chemical exposure can damage sweat glands, preventing sweat from being released through the pores.

7. Genetic Conditions

Another factor of not sweating during exercise that requires certain medical attention is particular genetic conditions. People with specific genetic conditions have sweat glands that are unable to function properly.

As a result, they may rarely sweat or be unable to sweat at all, even after physical activity. This condition is commonly associated with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Tips to Exercise Safely While Not Sweating

For individuals without certain medical conditions, here are practices to solve not sweating while exercising:

1. Reducing the Time to Exercise Under the Heat of the Sun

Try to do your workout in a temperature-controlled room. Opt for indoor exercises if possible. If you must do outdoor exercises, wear clothes that do not trap heat.

2. Wearing Clothes Suitable to the Activities

Avoid tight clothing that restricts heat release. Instead, choose loose, lightweight materials that allow better air circulation and help regulate body temperature.

3. Fulfilling Body Hydration

Less sweat production during exercise may be caused by not getting plenty of body fluids. Therefore, prepare a bottle of water before starting your workout. This way, you can drink water to replace the lost fluid during exercise.

This concludes the causes of not sweating or less sweat production while exercising and tips to sweat more in daily exercise. Less sweat production may indicate certain medical conditions. However, generally this is caused by inadequate hydration.
