History of Rounders, Basic Technique & Rules of the Game

Rounders is a team sport that is well known in Indonesia, as it is commonly included in the physical education curriculum in schools.

At first glance, rounders may look similar to baseball or softball. However, despite these similarities, rounders has several distinct characteristics that set it apart from other bat-and-ball games.

Rounders is classified as a ball sport, alongside basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Each of these sports has distinct rules and techniques that define how the game is played.

To better understand rounders, let’s explore the information below—starting with its history, definition, objectives, and the basic techniques every player needs to know.

What Are Rounders?

Rounders is a type of ball game played by two teams using two pieces of equipment, namely a ball and a bat.

The teams involved in the game take turns throwing, catching, and hitting the ball.

There are 12 players on each team, including one captain. However, this number can be adjusted in accordance with the rules or the availability of players on the field.

In rounders, effective teamwork among players on the same team is essential. To play to their full potential in a match, every player on a team needs to be agile and work together.

The game begins with the fielding team throwing the ball to a player from the batting team. Then the defending team will try to catch the ball.

When the ball is caught, it will be played to target the throwing team, who is running to change positions.

Members of the throwing team need to change positions to return to “home”. If the ball hits a player on the way “home”, there will be a change of teams.

The pitching team will score points if they successfully pass the fielding team's defense and are not hit by the ball during the base running to return to “home.”

The team that initially hits the ball will catch the ball, and vice versa. This change in turns for hitting and catching the ball is what makes the game exciting.

History of Rounders

Rounders is a game that has been played for a long time. According to a children's book titled A Little Pretty Pocket Book, rounders have been played in England since the Tudor era (1485-1603).

To this day, it is still unclear when rounders was first played.

However, one point that can be established from historical records is that rounders predate baseball.

In Indonesia, rounders began during the Dutch and Japanese colonial periods. Schoolchildren and community members often played this team sport during that era.

Basic Techniques of Rounders

Four basic techniques of rounders must be mastered before taking the field: throwing, hitting, running, and catching.

1. Throwing Technique

The throwing technique is the first thing you need to learn before starting to play rounders. The following are four techniques for throwing a rounder that are commonly used when playing rounders:

A. Ground Throw

A ground throw is performed by bending over so that the ball skims the ground. This throw is used to pass the ball to the nearest player. A ground throw is performed by:

  • Spread your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Bend your body and direct your gaze to the player you intend to pass to.
  • Throw the ball downward by swinging your arm so that the ball skips along the ground.

B. Overhead Throw

The overhead throw technique is used to pass the ball to a player who is quite far away. Here is how to do it:

  • Position your body sideways and focus your gaze on the target where you want to throw the ball.
  • Position your right foot forward, then spread your legs as needed.
  • Throw the ball forward and upward, ensuring that it flies higher than your head.
  • Practice by repeating the movement so that the throw hits the target accurately.

C. Low Throw

A low throw, or throwing the ball from below, is used to make a low and stable throw. Here is how to do it:

  • Position one foot in front and lean your body slightly forward.
  • Lower your body slightly.
  • Swing your arm and throw the ball toward the batter.

D. Straight or Flat Throw

A straight or flat throw is used to throw the ball toward the back or feet of an opposing player who is changing position. Here is the way to do it:

  • Stand upright and focus your gaze on the moving target.
  • Throw the ball straight and flat toward the target.
  • Be careful not to throw too hard to avoid injuring your teammates.

2. Hitting Techniques

There are three hitting techniques in rounders: straight, lofted, and low. Here is a brief explanation of each:

  • Straight hit: Performed by slightly opening the feet, straightening the body, and hitting the ball straight ahead.
  • Lofted hit: Aimed at lofting the ball high into the air by turning your body sideways and swinging the bat at an angle.
  • Low hit: Performed by hitting the ball quickly and low so that it bounces off the ground.

3. Running Techniques

Running to change positions is an essential aspect of rounders. In a rounders game, players can run in a straight line or zigzag.

It is important to recognize the bases that must be passed and estimate your running speed so that you can avoid the opposing team's throws.

4. Catching Techniques

In rounders, accuracy in catching the ball is something that cannot be overlooked. Here are three rounders catching techniques you need to know:

  • Catch a ball that is flying horizontally by closing or tightening the fingers while pulling both hands backward.
  • Catch a ball that is skimming along the ground by crouching while slightly bending your body and spreading the fingers of both hands wide.
  • Catch a high-flying ball by standing upright and opening both your hands to catch the ball from above.

Rules of Rounders

Several rules of rounders must be understood, including the use of the equipment and proper play. Here are the rules of rounders that you must understand:

  • Number of Players: Each team comprises 12 players, who take turns as the batting and fielding teams.
  • Equipment & Field: The game uses a small ball and bats, as well as a field with several bases where players can stop.
  • How to Play: Players from the batting team hit the ball and run to the bases. The fielding team is tasked with catching the ball and “tagging out” opposing players by throwing the ball at them while they are running.
  • Scoring & Winner: Teams earn points each time a player successfully returns to the batting area without being “tagged out.” The team with the most points wins.
