The Concepts & Chess Game Strategy, Beginners Must Know!

Chess is known as a brain-teasing activity because it demands strong focus and concentration. If you’re interested in trying it, the first step is to understand basic chess strategies for beginners.

Chess has been played for more than 1,500 years. It originated in India in the 6th century, where it was known as chaturanga.

Each chess piece represents military units from that period of war, namely infantry, cavalry, elephants, chariots, a general, and a king.

So, how has chess evolved into the game we know today, and what strategies should beginners learn? Find out in the explanation below.

The Importance of Chess Game Strategy

Before starting to play chess, there are several things you need to learn, as much of the game revolves around tactics.

Tactics do not appear on their own. They are created through well-planned strategies that allow you to take advantage of opportunities and work toward victory.

During the game, a player must carefully observe every move made by the opponent. Each mistake can be used as a chance to gain an advantage.

Basic Concepts of Chess Game Strategy

Chess is often seen as a sport that trains the brain and sharpens thinking skills. Mastering chess game strategy requires consistent practice and continuous learning.

In general, the basic concepts of chess strategy include the following:

1. Number of Chess Pieces

For beginners, it is important to understand how many chess pieces each player has when learning chess strategy.

Simply put, a player with more pieces usually has a stronger position and a better chance of winning by breaking through the opponent’s defense and delivering checkmate.

2. Chess Piece Activity

Having many chess pieces does not always guarantee victory. Even a smaller number of pieces can control the game if they are active and well-positioned.

Therefore, the placement and movement of each piece must be carefully considered when planning a winning strategy.

3. Pawn Structure

Closely related to piece placement, pawn structure is an important factor when planning a chess strategy for beginners. Certain pawn formations must be carefully considered to support effective play.

To launch an attack, you need a solid pawn structure that allows your other pieces to move more freely.

In addition, pay attention to the space available on the board, including how many squares your pieces can control.

Players who control more squares have greater freedom to maneuver, making it easier to attack and defend.

4. King Safety

In the hierarchy of chess pieces, the king holds the most important role. For this reason, protecting the king should always be a top priority to avoid checkmate.

Avoid critical mistakes, such as sacrificing pieces in front of the king just to capture an opponent’s piece, as this can leave the king exposed to dangerous attacks in later moves.

Understanding Chess Game Strategies for Beginners

Now that you understand the basic concepts of chess, it is time to learn beginner chess strategies, including the following:

1. Recognizing Chess Piece Characteristics

Besides knowing the number of pieces, beginners must understand the characteristics of each chess piece and how they move.

  • Pawn: The lowest position in the chess hierarchy, worth 1 point, and can only move forward one or two steps. Attacks can only be made diagonally.
  • Rook: Shaped like a tower, worth 5 points, and can move horizontally or vertically as far as possible, regardless of other pieces in its path.
  • Knight: A horse-shaped piece worth 3 points that can move in an L-shape, two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or one square horizontally and two squares vertically in any direction. Attacks can only be made against pieces on the square it sits on.
  • Bishop: Shaped like a minister's hat, worth 3 points, and can move vertically or as far as possible to attack.
  • Queen/Minister: A piece with a crown, worth 9 points, and can move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally without restriction, and can attack from any direction.
  • King: A piece wearing a crown, worthless, holds the highest and most crucial position in the game. The king can only move one square in any direction and attack in the same way. The game ends when one player loses their king.

2. Take Turns with Your Opponent

In chess, players take turns making moves. White always moves first, usually by advancing a piece from the front rank.

Black then responds with a move of their own. It is important to play carefully from the beginning and avoid reckless attacks.

Do not sacrifice pawns too early or expose your king, as this can make it easier for your opponent to deliver a checkmate.

3. Think One or Two Moves Ahead

When learning beginner chess strategies, train yourself to think one or two moves ahead.

Every move affects the flow of the game, so consider when to attack and when to defend in order to gain an advantage over your opponent.

4. Adapt to the Direction of the Game

Learning to play chess as a beginner comes with challenges that may slow your progress.

However, you can adapt by combining different strategies to respond effectively to your opponent’s play.

Keep an open mind, control pieces in multiple areas of the board, and adjust your tactics as the game develops.

Avoid sacrificing pieces without careful consideration, especially if it puts your king in danger and increases the risk of being checkmated.
