Do you know that to really enjoy volleyball, you need to learn the basic techniques first? Besides that, knowing the right moves helps you reduce the risk of sports injuries.
Basically, volleyball techniques are divided into four categories: serve, passing, smash, and block. By mastering these four, you can play well and stay safe. If you’re still not sure how to perform these moves, stick around until the end!
Volleyball Basics for Beginners
Before you start practicing, you should do a quick warm-up to avoid potential injuries. Here is how you can perform several basic volleyball techniques:
1. Serve
The serve is the very first basic move, used to start a set or a match. While there are several types like the jump serve or jump float, beginners should start with these two:
Underhand Serve
- This is the easiest serve to learn. Here is how you do it:
- Stand straight while holding the ball in your non-dominant hand.
- Clench your dominant hand into a fist with your thumb tucked inside.
- Toss the ball about 50 cm high, then hit it with your dominant hand.
Overhead Serve
As the name suggests, this move is done from above. It’s a bit more challenging than the underhand version. Here is the breakdown:
- Stand tall with your knees slightly bent and hold the ball with your non-dominant hand.
- Position your dominant hand behind your head with your palm facing forward.
- Toss the ball up about 1 meter with your non-dominant hand.
- Swing your dominant hand forward and strike the ball.
2. Passing
The next basic technique is passing. This is likely the move you’ll use most often. Passing is divided into two types: underhand and overhead. Here is the breakdown:
Underhand Passing
Underhand passing is a vital skill, usually used to set up a teammate or handle a heavy smash from the opponent. Here is how to perform it:
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent.
- Keep your arms straight together in front of you, forming a 45-degree angle with your body.
- Place one palm over the other and align your thumbs.
- When the ball comes, swing your arms from the bottom up. Make sure the ball hits the area between your wrist and elbow.
Overhead Passing
It should be noted that overhead passing is trickier than underhand passing. Usually, it’s used to set the ball to a teammate for a smash. Here is how to do it:
- Stand with your knees bent and lean your body slightly forward.
- Keep your hands ready in front of your chest. When the ball arrives, lift your hands to forehead level and get under the ball.
- Form a circle with your index fingers and thumbs, then push the ball with your wrists when it touches your fingers.
3. Smash
The next technique required to play is the smash. This is an attacking move meant to score points. Here is how to do it:
- Focus on the ball’s path, then take two steps forward with the last step as your base to jump.
- Swing your hand from behind and time it with the speed of the set ball.
- Hit the ball with your palm, aiming it downward into the opponent's area.
4. Block
The final basic technique is the block. This is a defensive move used to stop an opponent’s smash. Here is how to practice it:
- Focus on the ball and keep your hands above your head.
- When the ball is about to be hit toward you, jump and block it with both hands.
- Try to tilt your palms slightly downward so the ball bounces back into the opponent's court.
